General

The entries that you give for counsellor etc. on this page will appear at various places on the QuickScan reports.

Dyslexia counsellor: the person or organisation that offers dyslexia counselling.

Counsellor's location: the place where you offer study skills support and more specific language and literacy support.

Dyslexia/study skills services: the study skills and language support services that are available.

Study skills counsellor: the person to contact for further information or for training in study skills, language support etc. Also include contact information (phone etc.).

Audio on?: put a tick in the box to hear audio during the QuickScan test.

4 Character batch code: the leading four characters of the Student ID that is printed on reports and used to identify the student can be set here. You might use an acronym for your institution or similar.

Prompt for ID?: place a tick in the box to turn on the prompt for the student's ID and date of birth at the start of the program. The Student ID and date of birth for all students who have used the system can be found in the file "COUNTID.CSV".

Use ID as password?: If this box is ticked the student must have a valid Student ID and date of birth as displayed in the Administration section of QuickScan (see Start/Administration and Settings/Admin). Names can be added manually or imported from a text list - for example students.txt. Alternatively a file called students.txt can be put into the data folder and this will be used directly by the program. The file students.txt should be populated with a list of authorised student IDs and dates of birth, separated by a commma. Most Managment Information Systems can be made to export such a comma delimited list.

Show name on report?: The student's name is printed at the top of the QuickScan report if this is ticked. Please ensure that "Get name at start" is also ticked when choosing this option.

Show ID on report?: place a tick here so that the student's Student ID is displayed on reports.

Get name at start?: tick here to prompt for the student's name at the start of each QuickScan session.

Settings for standalone QuickScan.

You should not need to change the Data Folder setting unless you are using the standalone version to access a network version. If this is the case then the data folder name should be the name by which the workstation knows the network data folder ie: G:\db or \\SERVER-PC\...\db or similar. Contact your Network Administrator.

When settings are complete click the "Save" button. You will be shown a password for use if you are using settings again or wish to use QuickScan Administration, please take a note of this password.

Installing Network Quick Scan and Settings for network QuickScan

To install QuickScan on a network you should log on to a workstation with full rights to the folders that you will use on the server.

Prior to installation you should ideally also create the folder that will be used for QuickScan programs in the Program Files folder in Vista or the Program Files (x86) folder in Windows 7 and check that this is writeable using notepad.  network drive").

Use a workstation to install QuickScan on a network, do not use the file server itself. Run setup.exe or setupXP.exe on a workstation and specify the network program folder when it prompts for the name for the program folder. When specifying the name of the program folder it will be something like: \\SERVER-PC\Program Files (x86)\StudyScan\QuickScan . Aternatively this folder can be mapped to a drive letter at the workstation so that it can be found by the setup program (right click on folder and choose "Map Network Drive").

It is essential that before you install QuickScan on a network you create the folder that will be used for QuickScan data and test that this can be used for reading and writing files from the workstations when logged in as a student (test by creating a file on a workstation using "notepad").

Having installed QuickScan on the server you may then change the settings for network QuickScan at any time. Use the workstation where you installed QuickScan and choose Start Menu/All Programs/StudyScan/Administration and Settings for QuickScan. The settings dialogue will appear. Set the Network Folder Name as described below and then follow the notes for "General" settings (see top of page).  Once the settings are complete the Administration and Settings option will become password protected and will also allow access to QuickScan Administration.

Network folder name: the name that the workstations will use to access the data folder on the network ie: K:\db or \\SERVER-PC\Users\Public\.. or similar. You can press the "Browse" button to browse to the appropriate folder. All workstation users must be given read/write/create/modify access to this folder.

You can create a mapping for the ..\Studyscan folder on each workstation that uses QuickScan or you can use the standard \\networkservername\.. format. If you wish to create a mapping the mapping for network drives is available on each workstation using the options Computer/Tools/Map Network Drive (or My Computer/Tools/Map Network Drive).
The Network folder name is never C:\...

The StudyScan folder is usually in a subfolder called ...\Studyscn\DB. Should you have any problems with the interoperation of the new QuickScan and StudyScan you can separate the two products by specifying a new data folder for QuickScan.

Installing network workstations

Having installed QuickScan on a fileserver go to each workstation and create a shortcut to QuickScan.exe or QuickScXP.exe for XP workstations. Alternatively you can put the appropriate links in any startup scripts your organisation may use.

Administrators may be given access to qssettings.exe (or if using XP xsettings.exe), which starts "QuickScan Administration and Settings", by creating a shortcut on their personal workstations.

"Do you want to run this file?" warning message

Please note that machines that have an up-to-date version of Internet Explorer or which are running Windows 7 will have a "Do you want to run this file?" warning message that pops up when QuickScan is accessed from the file server. This is normal and now even happens if you try to access Microsoft Notepad.exe on a server! Network administrators are now burdened with the need to maintain Group Policies on large networks. If you maintain a Group Policy then ensure that the QuickScan program and data folders are covered. If you do not maintain a Group Policy see "readme-warningremoval.txt" for a work around.

Annual Archives: transfer the entire contents of the data folder to an archive folder. QuickScan will load a new database file into the data folder and start afresh.
